Art of Food 2011

600 tissue paper tassels

8 burlap banners

6 hours to decorate

What a crowd! Biggest attendance ever!
Absolutely worth the 2 months of work.

The brown cow brought in a $200 donation!
It will be going to a great home to hang in a little boy's room.

The giant knife, fork and spoon were requested by another patron for their kitchen.

Flowers provided by Mueller Family Farm. Absolutely gorgeous flowers and I was so happy to meet the Mueller family. I think we might be taking our little one out to see their 10 acres.

Thanks to everyone for their help and support! I can't wait for next year!

Art of Food

Every year Slow Food St. Louis has a fund raiser called the Art of Food. It is a great evening combining outstanding local ingredients, the best local chefs and a silent auction of unique culinary items. I've been a member of Slow Food for a few years now but I've never put my membership into action. This year I was asked to participate by helping decorate the event. I have a clean slate and free reign! I am so excited about this opportunity. I have been brainstorming night and day, bouncing a lot of ideas off of friends and scouring all my trusted sources for inspiration. Take a look at what I'm working with at Koken Art Factory....

Here is my concept board:
All my supplies are ordered and on the way! I can't wait to start pulling everything together!

New Desk Chairs

Way back in April of 2010 my friend Amy and I both happened to be moving to the suburbs at the exact same time...and almost to the exact same place (ok, not exact but within 10 min. of each other). As Amy was trying to pack up and empty her old house she sent me the image above and asked me if I wanted these chairs, for free. I have a thing for chairs (ask my husband). I tend to feel the need to rescue every cute, old chair that I find, especially if it is a small, vintage child's chair. So I said sure thing, I'll be right over.

Well, the chairs sat around our new house in various places for 14 months but now they finally have a new look.

I dug through my stash of fabric and found JUST enough of this pattern that I have had laying around for YEARS! It was some remnant piece from Hancock Fabrics that I originally made in to a tote bag. I LOVE this fabric and I was so excited that I had enough to use on these chairs. I spray painted the chair frames a sage green to match the fabric. Their new home will be down in our lower level at our computer and sewing desk.

Thanks Amy!

4th of July Weekend

Took a road trip to Artichoke Annie's Antique Mall in Columbia Missouri. Huge place with some really great stuff, I really should have taken more pictures. Also finally got to see Annie and Simon's farm. It is still very much a work in progress but it has some amazing potential. I can't wait to watch them turn it into a beautiful home over the next few years.

Thank you, One Kings Lane

This arrived in my mailbox yesterday, two bars of Claus Porto soap. The note said "Thank You". Apparently One Kings Lane has been making some upgrades and wanted to thank their members for their patience. Pretty darn impressive indeed! I've only made one purchase from One Kings Lane so far but there has been a LOT of drooling and dreaming. If you love deals on high end, quality, interior design goods... sign up, you won't be sorry.

Feast in the Field

This past Sunday evening Andrew and I were lucky enough to accompany several friends to a really wonderful event at Claverach Farm; our local Slow Food, Feast in the Field.

The bad news is I am not in good practice of bringing along when camera when I really should. The good news is that another local blogger, Stacy from 'every little thing', did a wonderfully detailed description of the evening. I give her full credit for all of these great pictures. Please go check out her blog for a full description of the event.

My first favorite dish! The first course, Winslow's Jar of Peas, from Cary McDowell of Winslow's Home. Spectacular! Mom, remember when peas were the vegetable I hated the most as a kid? What was I thinking? These peas were from heaven.

My second favorite dish. Fifth course, Anthony Devoti from Five and Clara Moore from Local Harvest Cafe. Garlic braised rabbit saddle and rabbit rillete stuffed grape leaves. Awesome!

The other highlight of the evening was running into our wedding coordinator, Christy Augustin, from 4 years ago! (It really is a small world.) Christy was there volunteering on behalf of Le Cordon Bleu and made THE most amazing bread for the event.

Congrats to all of our friends who planned, organized and worked so hard to make this event happen. You all did a wonderful job! I'm so glad we were able to be a part of it.

Playing in a Tree house

I've been busy here with laryngitis, pink eye, coughs, sore throats, runny noses, etc. Oh, summer colds how I wish you would take a hike.

I have also been busy designing an attic play space for two close friends and their two little ones. The attic is pretty small and squeezed into the eaves of the house with two large dormer windows. There is barely enough room for me to stand up straight. This space is truly meant for children! My first reaction was, "this is like a tree house". Which reminded me of the pillow shown above that I have been coveting on Etsy for some time.

My inspiration was born, this space would be a tree house. Some other tree house inspired elements I wanted to incorporate were some faux bois fabric, faux bois carpet and vinyl tree decals.

Unfortunately the faux bois carpet blew the budget and we had to switch to Plan B for the flooring but everything else is coming together. Can't wait to show you the finished space!

Bookshelves

I hinted that I was working on something and above is the end result. Bookshelves! All of our books have been stacked in the basement since we moved in just a little over 1 year ago. I kept going back and forth trying to decide between built-ins, shelves or furniture to solve this book storage problem. Built-ins was my first choice...but financially that wasn't going to happen.

{via Ballard Designs}

I did consider these shelves. I really like the industrial/vintage look of them. However, they weren't exactly cheap and these particular shelves weren't very wide, only 30".

{via CB2}

I considered these shelves too but again, they weren't quite the dimensions I was looking for and they were a little too contemporary.

The end result was to get these brackets from Ikea and poplar wood boards from Home Depot. Total cost under $300.
